The protective dam of 220 m length (incl. both sides of 50 m each), 18 m height and a view area of 4000 m² protects the village from the hazards of avalanches. It is located at an altitude of 1273 m above sea level and was built in a 3-year construction period from 2002 to 2004.
Textomur is a system for steep slopes, retaining structures and protective banks. It lends itself to full-surface grassing and plant growth. The construction in Airolo is in the main made from ground material which was available directly on the site.
This Textomur™ construction impresses by its size and the fact that it fits nearly invisibly into the natural environment of the village of Airolo. It consists of a block wall at the base and is then built up in layers using 76,500 m² of reinforcing fabric Datex™ KN with Optiforce™ plus 13,500 m² of vegetation nonwoven, both produced by Landolt.
